21st Century Skills: Why Is It Important For You To Have GRIT In Life To Succeed?

Everybody wants to succeed in life, whether it’s at school, at work, sport, or just a hobby. But success requires hard work, and the skills and personal attributes to overcome the obstacles that will inevitably get in the way.

In Tanoto Foundation’s TELADAN program we teach young people nine characteristics they need to excel in whatever field they choose, helping create the next generation of Indonesian leaders.

And one of the most important is GRIT. But what it is and how do you train it?

Angela Duckworth in her book entitled GRIT: The Power of Passion and Perseverance explains that talent alone is not enough to be successful, you would need the ability to push on despite encountering obstacles. In short, GRIT.

Here’s how we encourage Tanoto Scholars to learn this important skill:

    1. Stand up for what you believe

It is important for you to know what you like and not to have any doubts about how to voice it. If you’re not confident about speaking up, visualize the positive outcomes of doing so.

    2. Don’t be afraid to ask for help

If you have a hard time in a situation that you cannot face on your own, don’t be embarrassed to ask questions and share with others.

    3. Discover your interests

Discovering your interests is one of the first steps to setting a goal. Knowing what interests you enables you to focus on the important things, and it will also help you to stay on the path you choose while facing challenges in life.

    4. Keep practicing

Keep practicing and focus on honing skills. Take setbacks as an opportunity to learn rather than seeing them as a failure.

So what are the other characteristics we aim to teach in our scholars? Here’s the full list:

    a. Self-awareness: Conscious knowledge of one’s own character and feelings
    b. Driven: Be passionate, focused on learning and competitive.
    c. Integrity: Being honest and showing a consistent and uncompromising adherence to strong moral and ethical principles and values
    d. Grit: Able to persist in something they feel passionate about and persevere when facing obstacles
    e. Innovative: Actively seek out opportunities
    f. Continuous Learning: The practices the individual carries out daily in order to continue increasing knowledge
    g. Caring for Others: Able to understand different perspectives and needs, and work at being socially sensitive, considerate, and perceptive.
    h. Empowering Others: Bringing energy and enthusiasm
    i. Entrepreneurial Spirit: Actively seeks out change, rather than waiting to adapt to change

However, GRIT characteristic does not come naturally and needs to be developed over time.

Motivate Children to Study at Home by Being Their Best Friend

Pojok PINTAR is a casual talk show that discusses various topics related to the development of Basic Education in Indonesia. The program is hosted by Tanoto Foundation, an independent family philanthropy organisation founded by Sukanto Tanoto and Tinah Bingei Tanoto in 1981.

More than one billion children around the world have been forced to study from home over the past year.

As a parent, how can you help guide your children through this new reality? How do you cope with working from home while helping with online learning? And how can you use this opportunity to build stronger bonds with your kids?

In the first episode of Pojok PINTAR, our host Jerry Arvino talks with M Ari Widowati, Director of Basic Education of Tanoto Foundation, and FX Banu Resiyawan, Education Specialist of Tanoto Foundation, to dig deeper on how parents are able to guide their children to study at home. They cover:

    a. What is the impact of learning from home on children and teenagers?

    b. How can you use this opportunity to build stronger bonds with your children?

    c. How do parents deal with moody teenagers?

    d. How can you support your children’s learning?

Pandemic is an opportunity to be closer to children

Children are unable to carry out their normal activities, such as going to schools or meeting and hanging out with their friends. While this obviously presents a lot of challenges, it also presents an opportunity for parents to become closer to their kids.

One strategy is to take the time to learn your children’s passions, uniqueness, hobbies, skills and intelligence. When you have positioned yourself as a child’s best friend, then you can direct your children, including helping them in reaching their goals.

    Communication is key

Parents must continue to build relationships with constant communication, verbally and non-verbally. “[Before the pandemic] I used to go on a lot of business trips, but when I returned from work, I always hugged my child, greeted my child, and I’m still doing it until now,” said Ari Widowati when asked about her experience of being her child’s best friend.

  • 21st Century Skills: The Importance of Caring for Others

21st Century Skills: The Importance of Caring for Others

The ability to work alongside and get along with fellow human beings is vital in almost any personal and professional situation, which is why Caring for Others is one of the nine characteristics Tanoto Foundation, an independent family philanthropy organisation founded by Sukanto Tanoto and Tinah Bingei Tanoto in 1981, aims to nurture among future leaders in our TELADAN Program.

Caring for others is not only about helping and putting the needs of others before our personal interests, but it is also the ability to hear, understand and recognize others’ needs and feelings.

This skill is beneficial for others and for ourselves. The ability to understand makes it easier for us to communicate with others and creates a stronger bond with them.

Then how can we ensure we care for others? Here are some ways that potential future leaders can follow:

    1. Be aware of your surroundings

Look at your surroundings: you may come across some people who need your help.

While interacting with them, try to identify their problems and needs, listen to them and try to understand their issues from their point of view. Recognizing and understanding others are among the first steps to care for others.

    2. Be part of the solution

After spending time to observe, it’s important to come up with a solution to help others. Offer clear, accurate and effective ideas. However, please bear mind, the solution must be according to what others need, not what you think is good for them.

    3. Take actions and start contributing

Former president of the United States Abraham Lincoln once said that actions speak louder than words. The same thing applies with Caring for Others. After finding the issues and coming up with a solution, it’s important to start contributing. The action you take will be the true meaning of Caring for Others, providing or taking care of someone, and also provides benefits to you, such as a better interaction or a deeper bond between you and the other party.
