Education, Passion, and Ikigai: The Keys to the Success of “Jumbo” Director

In the latest episode of Tanoto Foundation’s Bincang Inspiratif Podcast, animated film director Ryan Adriandhy shares the story behind the success of “Jumbo”, a film that has surpassed 10 million viewers and earned the title of the highest-grossing Indonesian film of all time.
“Jumbo” began with Ryan’s dream, education, and perseverance, which eventually produced a work with a wide-reaching impact. His journey shows that when education aligns with passion and persistence, it can provide a strong foundation for building a remarkable career.
In this conversation, Ryan recalls his early love for animation. It all started with his childhood habit of drawing comics back in elementary school.
Young Ryan would draw comics on HVS paper, photocopy them, and rent them out to friends for five hundred rupiah. From this simple activity was born his enthusiasm for creating, storytelling, and entrepreneurship through art.
His passion for animation inspired Ryan to pursue higher education abroad. Despite his family’s limited financial means, his determination never wavered. He persistently sought scholarships until he successfully earned a bachelor’s degree in Visual Communication Design and went on to complete a master’s in Animation.
Ryan believes that everyone has their own path. He draws inspiration from the Japanese philosophy of Ikigai: uniting what we love, what we are good at, what the world needs, and what can provide us with a livelihood.
Beyond creativity, Ryan also shares his experience in leading a large team of animators, the soft skills that helped his career, and his contributions to society.
