Dumai, 22 September 2016 – Education in Indonesia, particularly basic and senior secondary education levels, continues to improve. According to Center for Data and Statistics of Republic of Indonesia’s Ministry of Education and Culture, in 2014/2015 the Gross Enrollment Ratio of primary education has reached 109.5% while that of junior secondary education has reached 100.5%. The numbers of primary schools and junior secondary schools are also quite sufficient, namely 148,272 primary schools and 35,488 junior secondary schools for all of Indonesia.
However, improvement in education access should continue to be supported by an improvement in education quality. Education quality is determined by various components, among others competency of teachers as well as adequacy of facilities, that enable continuous improvement of quality of teaching learning process.
Tanoto Foundation, which was established by Sukanto Tanoto and Tinah Bingei Tanoto, supports the education sector through two activities, namely increase in access to education and improvement in education quality. To increase access to education, Tanoto Foundation has awarded scholarships to more than 6,600 school children and university students as well as undertaken cooperation with 35 universities in Indonesia.
Meanwhile, in its activities related to the improvement of education quality, Tanoto Foundation undertakes the program of Pelita Pendidikan, which is an abbreviation of Peningkatan Kualitas Pendidikan (Improvement of Education Quality). One of the activities under Pelita Pendidikan program is Pelita Guru Mandiri (Improvement of Quality of Independent Teachers) program, which involves development of teacher capacity in teaching learning process in classrooms and support activities for the improvement of school facilities and physical infrastructure. For these activities, the Tanoto Foundation has undertaken partnerships with more than 466 schools in Riau, Jambi, and North Sumatra Provinces.
“Tanoto Foundation was founded by Mr. Sukanto Tanoto and Mrs. Tinah Bingei Tanoto. The goal of Tanoto Foundation’s establishment is to support poverty alleviation efforts through three activity pillars, namely education, empowerment, and enhancement of quality of lives,” said Sihol Aritonang, Head of Tanoto Foundation Executive Board, in the handover event of the Madrasah Tsanawiyah Nurul Islam and SDN 001, Lubuk Gaung, Dumai, Riau from Tanoto Foundation to the Municipality Government of Dumai, on Thursday, 22 September 2016.
Further on, Sihol Aritonang added that increase in access to education is important, however, improvement of education quality is just as important. “To provide quality education that can be accessed by all layers of the community, Tanoto Foundation provides support in the form of various trainings for teachers for improving their capacities and competencies as well as support in improvement of physical facilities, such as renovation of school buildings, repair of classrooms, and renovation as well as provision of toilets and clean water facilities,” added Sihol Aritonang.
Tanoto Foundation’s support for Madrasah Tsanawiyah Nurul Islam Lubuk Gaung includes renovation of classrooms, dormitory, and toilets as well as provisions of furniture for classrooms and library as well as sports equipment. Meanwhile, the support for SDN 001 Lubuk Gaung includes renovation of classrooms and provision of clean water facility in the forms of an artesian well and water taps.
These supports constitute part of the program undertaken by Tanoto Foundation jointly with its corporate partner, PT. SDS APICAL Group, in six schools in Dumai, Riau. Four other schools that also receive similar supports are SDN 003 Bangsal Aceh, SDN 004 Bangsal Aceh, SDN 006 Bangsal Aceh, and Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Negeri Lubuk Gaung.
